Abstract

To decarbonize the energy supply for Speyer and Schifferstadt, geopfalz GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Speyer GmbH and the city of Schifferstadt, is pursuing the intermunicipal geothermal project "Rhein-Pfalz." This project represents a key component of sustainable heat supply and is supported by the collaborative research project AGENS through comprehensive scientific, communicative, and economic measures.

The primary goal of the AGENS project ("Demonstration of an adaptive, multilateral reservoir stimulation for geothermal energy to mitigate seismicity and costs in the Upper Rhine Graben") is to develop and implement an innovative strategy for the exploitation of a geothermal reservoir in the Upper Rhine Graben. The focus of the five-year project is the establishment of a deep geothermal doublet with two main wells and several lateral wells. This doublet will undergo comprehensive scientific monitoring to ensure that seismicity remains at minimal levels and that the flow rates required for economic viability are achieved. Early public engagement and stakeholder involvement aim to promote broad acceptance of the project among stakeholders and the general public, while all measures will be systematically evaluated scientifically.

This presentation will provide initial insights into the intermunicipal geothermal and research project AGENS and outline the further plans.
